Take for example the Face Cloth. It's a small piece of cloth. It's straightforward to construct, and yet they no longer exist at my local drug store. I must have spent hours looking for a small piece of cloth, only to find that the only one in existence is a special, singularly packaged bamboo facecloth with a ruff side and a soft side. WTF. Another thought is the dork torch, or head lamps (flashlights that are attached to the head). 5 years ago we used to purchase these things for $20, they came with the small batteries they usually put in watches. The dinosaurs that used AA bateries were $12. Now, you go looking for a dork torch and all you can find are these super huge AA battery ones for $25 and you gotta go looking around for the small sleek ones at a special camping store. Companies, we were always aiming for smaller dork torches... and in fact if you made them much smaller, I'm sure you'd sell more of them because you won't just be dealing with just the dork market... And freakin' Duracell/Energizer batteries... WTF. That is WAY outdated technology from the freakin' 80's. WHY is that still around? Everytime I have to buy batteries for some stupid toy or air mattress pump, I just think why do I still have to buy these things. They're a pain to recycle, they don't sell rechargers anymore, and they last as long as pantyhose does on a little girl hunting for easter eggs. Anywho, I did end up finding a simple decent 4 pack of face cloths from, of all places, Bed Bath and Beyond (the Emperor of Over-Engineering), but still. Skip the freakin' plastic loofas that fall apart in 6 months and bring on the freakin' cloths! I'll save styrofoam for another day... (Why don't we have enough scientists to figure out how to recycle that shtuff yet.) |
When I look at what's in the stores, I wonder whether we're actually progressing ahead or investing too much time in stupid shtuff for the sake of capitalism...
